Italy (Milan, Ferrara, Bologna). They were commissioned by noble families.

The Visconti-Sforza deck (c. 1450s) is among the oldest surviving tarot decks. It was made for the Visconti and Sforza families of Milan.

Tarot began as tarocchi, a trick-taking card game. This game was similar in spirit to bridge, but was not a fortune-telling tool.

Tarot’s shift toward mysticism began in 18th-century France. It was led by Antoine Court de Gébelin. He claimed (incorrectly) that tarot had ancient Egyptian origins.

The 19th-century occultist Éliphas Lévi connected tarot to Kabbalah. This deepened its esoteric reputation.

The Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909) transformed tarot. It fully illustrated all 78 cards — including the Minor Arcana — for the first time. It made intuitive reading possible.

Before Rider-Waite-Smith, Minor Arcana cards were usually simple, unillustrated pip cards. They were like a suit of playing cards.

Today tarot is used worldwide for reflection, coaching, and creative inspiration. It is also widely used for esoteric and divinatory purposes.

Next lesson

Try a free 64tarot reading now.

Course index.

Thanks for reading 64tarot! We start with eleven foundational lessons. We cover where tarot came from, how the deck is structured, and how to ask a question.

From there, we move card by card through the entire deck. First, the Major Arcana, then Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles. Each lesson gives us key facts. The card lessons have a quick self-test to check what stuck, and a journal prompt to take it deeper. No prior tarot knowledge is required. There is no memorization pressure. However, with one lesson a day, we build steadily until we know tarot thoroughly

As each lesson is published, it will be linked here.

Intro Module (Lessons 1–11)

Core Teaching

Lesson 1 -
